The Rt Hon Priti Patel is now regarded as one of the most influential politicians in the UK.
She has been the MP for Witham in Essex since 2010. She was re-elected in 2015 and 2017 and continues to live in Essex.
She was the Secretary of State for International Development between July 2016 and November 2017.
Priti Patel was appointed Secretary of State for the Home Department on 24 July 2019.
Priti attended a comprehensive school in Watford before studying economics at Keele University. She completed her postgraduate studies at the University of Essex.
In November 2013, the Prime Minister appointed Priti as the first ever UK Indian Diaspora Champion. Before becoming an MP, she worked in consultancy and worked internationally.
Patel was born in London to a Ugandan-Indian family. She was educated at Keele University and the University of Essex.
In a radio interview in March 2018, Patel said that she found the commonly-used abbreviation BME (for Black and Minority Ethnic) to be “patronising and insulting”. This was because being born in Britain, she considered herself British first and foremost.
